QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Home AC questions, answered.

Common homeowner questions about home AC, refrigerant and the service conversation.

Does home AC use up refrigerant?

No. Refrigerant circulates inside a closed circuit. A low charge can point to a leak or an incorrect installation charge, not normal use. Ask for the cause to be checked rather than treating recharge as routine maintenance.

Why is my home AC blowing warm air?

A dirty filter, incorrect thermostat settings, dirty coils, a frozen coil, a drain safety switch or low refrigerant can all affect cooling. Warm air alone does not prove that the system needs more refrigerant.

How can I tell whether my AC is low on Freon?

Weak cooling, longer runs and ice can be clues, but they overlap with airflow and other faults. A technician needs to check the system and its operating conditions before confirming a low charge.

How often should home AC need a recharge?

There is no normal annual recharge schedule for a sound, properly charged system. If refrigerant has to be added repeatedly, ask whether a leak was found and repaired.

Can I add refrigerant to my home AC myself?

Leave work on the refrigerant circuit to a qualified technician with the appropriate EPA Section 608 certification. A car-AC recharge can is not a safe substitute for residential AC service.

What is the difference between Freon and refrigerant?

Refrigerant is the general term for the fluid that transfers heat. Freon is a trademark often used casually for refrigerants, particularly older R-22. The unit label, not the nickname, identifies what your system uses.

How much does a home AC recharge cost?

There is no single price that fits every system. Refrigerant type, quantity, diagnosis, leak repair and access affect the quote. Ask for an itemized estimate separating the service visit, repair and refrigerant charge.

Should a leak be fixed before adding refrigerant?

Ask the technician to locate and address a leak instead of repeatedly topping off a leaking system. Adding refrigerant without dealing with the cause can leave you paying for the same problem again.

Can an R-22 air conditioner still be serviced?

Yes. EPA does not require replacement of an existing R-22 unit. New U.S. production and imports ended in 2020, but reclaimed, recycled or previously produced R-22 can service existing equipment.

What should I do if the AC has ice on it?

Turn cooling off and contact an HVAC professional. Do not chip at the ice or open the refrigerant circuit. A frozen coil can be caused by airflow trouble as well as a refrigerant problem.
